Theravada Bhikkhuni and the Buddha's Four-fold Assembly

by Dr Dion Peoples, The Buddhist Channel, Aug 8, 2015

A properly functioning Sangha has four aspects: bhikkhus, bhikkhunis, lay women and lay men. All are equally required to uphold and support the Buddha's doctrinal tradition and practices.
Bangkok, Thailand -- When I was in the US Air Force, stationed in Germany, I was given a set of books - the writings of Nicherin, by an older woman co-worker.  I also came into contact with a Taiwanese Buddhist woman who owned and operated a Chinese Restaurant, near the base where I was stationed.

If the robes fit...

The monkhood has long been off limits to women, but one 'bhikkhuni' is pushing for change, arguing the tradition is based on nothing more than a misguided technicality

In Search of Spiritual Parity

Deccan Herald : in search of spiritual parity

Baishali Adak, Sep 10, 2014, DHNS:
Scene from the film White Robes
A senior research scholar and journalist, Teena Amrit Gill, recently screened her documentary film at the India International Centre in Delhi. With this film she brought to the fore a very niche subject that few would know about in India and even fewer would care. White Robes, Saffron Dreams dealt with the conspicuous absence of bhikhunis or Buddhist nuns in Thailand – a country that has an ancient tradition of Theravada Buddhism and over three lakh practising bhikhus or monks.

Breaking through Buddhism

Text and photos by Hilary Cadigan, Chiang Mai News, Vol. 23 No. 8 August 2014
Chiangmai, Thailand -- Ouyporn Khuankaew's life began as many do here in northern Thailand, in a poor rice-farming family of devout Buddhists. But despite the regular temple visits and dutiful merit-making, Ouyporn's father was a violent man who regularly beat his family, even threatening them with an axe in the middle of the night. No one in the close-knit neighbourhood ever stepped in to help, and the monks and abbots from the local temples never said a thing. Ouyporn's mother accepted the beatings as her karma.
