What is Buddhist Education?
In Buddhist understanding human beings are 'learning creatures'. We see our entire life as a learning process. Buddhism is an Education System with the idea that human beings have the potential to completely liberate themselves from all sufferings through a clear penetrative understanding of the way things are.

RE Council Newsletter February 2014

http://religiouseducationcouncil.org.uk/public-engagement/newsletters/2014-01-29/re-council-newsletter-february-2014

The end of January is often thought of as a time when will power falters and New Year’s resolutions are forgotten. But not for the RE Council! We are as resolved as ever to carry on working towards safeguarding and strengthening the provisions for RE in England and Wales, and are busy now following up the recommendations of the RE Review, despite distractions; This is reflected in our activities over the past month and plans for the future. Particularly exciting news this month includes the continuation of the APPG on RE inquiry into RE’s contribution to good community relations, and the launch of our Young Ambassadors for RE scheme, which we hope will continue to engage young people as much as it has during the pilot phase.
In this issue:
  • Introduction
  • APPG on RE
  • The RE PD Portal
  • Young Ambassadors for RE
  • The RE Council Website
  • RE Quality Mark
  • Recruitment: RE Adviser for RE Today Services
  • New NATRE membership
  • 'Big RE': Enriching RE
  • Hindu Council UK: Resources for teaching about Hinduism
  • Maimonides Foundation: Interfaith Explorer workshops
  • Prime Minister launches Commission on the Holocaust
  • 2014 Accord Inclusivity Award

Introducing Buddhist Action Month (BAM) - June 2014!

Introducing Buddhist Action Month (BAM) - June 2014!

Buddhist Action Month is coming soon, promoted by the Network of Buddhist Organisations. We'll be sending more information soon, but here's a six-point summary:
  1. Buddhist Action Month is June 2014.
  2. It's an annual month in which Buddhists across the UK are encouraged to focus on socially beneficial activities, locally, nationally or globally, inspired and motivated by Buddhist teachings and values.
  3. The suggested theme for BAM 2014 is caring for our environment but you can do whatever inspires you.
  4. BAM is part of Together in Service (TiS), an English multi-faith project initiated by the Department for Communities and Local Government.
  5. TiS grants are available for local projects involving people of more than one faith community (eg Buddhists and Christians, or Buddhists and Muslims) in England.
  6. Funding applications can be submitted all through the year and the next deadline is 6th February.
More details soon!

Launched at the end of January, it contains a searchable database of PD opportunities, an authoritative online CPD handbook, links to other useful websites, as well as relevant documents and articles for teachers and CPD providers. If you are running a CPD course which is not already listed you can send in submissions for the database by e-mailing pdportal@religiouseducationcouncil.org.uk.

REC: APPG on RE

The minutes of this event will be available on the website shortly, along with the minutes for the first session which took place on 10th December 2013.  Led by Dr Joyce Miller, the inquiry enables MPs to hear oral evidence from people with expertise in the field, supplemented by written evidence, and the outcome will be a short publication of good practice recommendations.  The third session will take place at Westminster on 24 February from 5 to 7 p.m.; to request an invitation or for further information please email appg@religiouseducationcouncil.org.uk.
